Preston Butler, a daguerrotypist, made four frequently viewed images of businesses surrounding what now is the Old Capitol square in 1859. See Springfield square, 1859.

    Harry, I have a note signed by Abraham Lincoln. Another note attached to it shows it was given to Illinois Governor J.W. Fifer in Bloomington in 1899 by “J.P. Butler.” Could that have been your grandfather, Preston Butler?
